When Someone You Love Is Missing From Your Wedding Day

Until recently, I hadn't really thought about what it means to plan a wedding when someone you love deeply won't be there to see it. Losing my dad recently has made me

think about the people who arrive at their wedding carrying an absence alongside all the excitement. Your wedding day is supposed to be one of the happiest days of your life. But what happens when someone you love deeply is no longer here to share it with you?

Losing someone close to you can make the thought of your wedding day complicated. You may find yourself thinking about the moments they should have been there for, seeing you walk down the aisle, hearing your vows, meeting your partner, or simply being part of the celebrations. And sometimes, the person you are missing can feel very present on a day when they are physically absent.

There may be tears alongside the laughter. A moment during the ceremony that catches you unexpectedly. A photograph that brings everything flooding back. And that is okay.

You don't have to choose between grieving for someone you love and celebrating your wedding day. Both can exist together.

There are many ways to include the memory of someone who has passed away, whether that is through a reading, a piece of music, a photograph, a personal tribute or simply a quiet moment of remembrance. But the most important thing to remember is that there is no right or wrong way to do it. Some couples want to acknowledge their loved one openly; others prefer to keep that connection private.

As a celebrant, I believe the most important thing is that your ceremony reflects you. That it includes the people, memories and experiences that have shaped your lives.

Because although someone may no longer be able to stand beside you on your wedding day, that doesn't mean they aren't still part of your story.
